The first Blue1 B717 commercial flight took off for Copenhagen on Sunday from Helsinki. With the introduction of the 717 Blue1 begins its fleet renewal. The 717 is to operate short and somewhat longer flights to cover the demand of Blue1's future traffic program and emphasis on business travel.More

Continental-United merger on track

The U.S. Justice Department has completed its review of the planned merger of United Airlines and Continental Airlines, and has no more anti-trust concerns. The announcement paves the way to merge the two airlines into the world’s largest airline. Singapore Airlines to fund environment programme

Singapore Airlines is donating $3 million US in its first major involvement in a large-scale environmental project. Funds will go to the Harapan Rainforest Initiative, a collaboration between international non-governmental organisations including BirdLife International and Burung Indonesia, BirdLife’s partner in Indonesia. Straddling Indonesia’s Jambi and South Sumatra provinces, Harapan Rainforest spans almost 100,000 hectares – an area one-and-a-half times the size of Singapore.More

However, we had limited the possible high score to 30 thinking that the questions were fairly tough. But employees routinely made the high score, which was pleasantly surprising. United Airlines and Continental Airlines have revealed refinements to the visual branding for the new global airline that will result from the proposed merger between the two airlines. THAI to create low-fare airline

THAI and Tiger Airways of Singapore will create a low-fare airline called Thai Tiger Airways, to start operations in the first quarter of next year. The airline will follow the same low-fare, low-cost model as the other airlines in the Tiger Airways group. Based in Bangkok, Thai Tiger will operate international and domestic flights out of Suvarnabhumi International Airport offering short-haul, point-to-point services within a five hour flying radius. The network and further information on the corporate structure haven't been announced.More

Second quarter results on the positive side

Air Canada, Continental, United and US Airways are reporting their second quarter numbers, and the results are encouraging. Air Canada issued a preliminary estimate showing that system capacity, as measured by ASMs, in the second quarter of 2010 was 5.3 per cent higher than the second quarter of 2009, within the range of the 4.5 to 5.5 per cent increase previously projected in the Q1 2010 release.
